Merlins Rest Pub has many different meanings behind the name. Our pub is the resting place for multiple Merlins, which is why we have no apostrophe before or after the “s”. Merlin the Wizard, Merlin the bird, and the Rolls-Royce PV-12 engine “Merlin”. The Merlin engine (1,030 horsepower) powered British Aircraft Spitfire, a single-seat fighter of WWII, also renowned for winning victory laurels in the Battle of Britain in 1940 and 1941. If you are ever across the pond, keep your eye out for Spitfire Amber Kentish Ale, a lovely brew that once was available at Merlins Rest but since has been discontinued in the US.
