Merlins Rest St. George’s Day Celebration – April 22 & 23

St. George slaying the dragon. That deserves a pint and a plate of roast beef!

Merlins Rest Pub (www.merlinsrest.com) on 36th Avenue and E. Lake Street in Minneapolis will be celebrating St. George’s Day on Sunday, April 22 and Monday, April 23. St. George’s Day is to England as St. Patrick’s Day is to Ireland. Merlins Rest Pub is a British Isles Pub and will start the celebration on April 22 with an English Breakfast served from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.

In the afternoon the menu will change to the traditional roast beef with potatoes, vegetables and Yorkshire pudding, with the full menu available until 10:00 p.m. Traditional Morris Dancers will begin performing at 1:00 p.m. and continue throughout the day with 5 different local dance troupes participating: MTM, Ramsey’s Braggarts, Bells of the North, Uptown on Calhoun, and Gypsy.

This is also the five-year anniversary of Merlins Rest, and there will be giveaways throughout the day. There will be a drawing for over $300 worth of English fare and a $50 gift certificate to Merlins Rest Pub. Any proceeds will go to Second Hand Hounds Rescue (http://secondhandhounds.org/). Also, classic English beers (and one hard cider) will be on special throughout the day: Old Speckled Hen, Fullers ESB, Boddingtons, and Strongbow.

The weekly Sunday Pub Quiz will start at 7:30 p.m., as always.

On St. George’s Day, Monday April 23, the Minneapolis Town Crier will be in attendance all day in all his livery to announce the Proclamation of the Day. The Bitter Mash Border Dancers will perform from 7:00 p.m. and throughout the night. There will be specials on all English Beers and the drawing for the English Goodie Basket will happen at 8:00 p.m. This is also the day that William Shakespeare died, nearly 400 years ago. In honor of the Bard, our own Minister of Culture, Bill Watkins, will recite a bit of Shakespeare.

A High Five Is Coming

It’s hard to believe it has been 5 years already, but, alas–we are primed to celebrate our 5th anniversary this month! Thank you all for making the pub’s life so engaging. From open jams to pub singalongs, Irish musicians to storytelling to traditional dances, etc., we’ve had an extraordinary opportunity to serve as a cultural and gathering center for our Cities and our neighborhood. Thank you so much for sharing your lives with us. We appreciate you!

So! The 5th Anniversary celebration is coming. It will also coincide with St. George’s Day. We will have 5 Morris Dancing Troupes coming by on April 22, The Bitter Mash will be here on April 23, and on April 23 we will also get a visit from none other than the Minneapolis Town Crier! What a fantastic way to usher in a St. George’s Day party.
