Friday arrives, the weather is warming, and the Twins are playing catch in Fort Meyers. It’s the 11-year-anniversary of the cloning of Dolly the Sheep.
And at Merlins Rest we’re breaking out the kilts.
All are invited up per usual, of course, but if you’ve got a kilt, hey: wear it! We are. You should too.
Show off the tartan, listen to some live Celtic music (session style), and tell some tales around the bar. It’s Friday: enjoy it!
THE SMITHWICK’S STORY
Just a friendly reminder for those of you who are fans of the oldest ale from Ireland: Smithwick’s. (That’s oldest in terms of number of years since opening; not the length of time the beer has been lying around. I swear, it’s fresh!) It took a bit of a respite from our taps, but by popular demand is back.
So when you’re up, consider starting a tour around the Isles. Get yourself a Smithwick’s, then maybe a Scottish Belhaven tonight. And then start a letter-writing campaign. We dearly want to see the best-named beer in the world exported from Wales, finally: Brains! The Welsh national rugby team even wears Brains-sponsored jerseys in their matches.
THIS WEEKEND’S HERE AND THERES
* We’re serving brunch from 9 am – 2 pm on Saturday and Sunday. It’s grand fare and has received rave reviews. We encourage you too to try out this traditional Irish breakfast or maybe an American classic from our kitchen.
* Ireland and Scotland battle in the Six Nations tournament, while England faces the menacing French and Wales takes a breath against the generally woeful Italians.
* The Hot Club of East Lake will be in the pub at 9 pm on Saturday.
* The good people of Oxfordshire must deal with stray pigs (seriously)
* And our Welsh publican John Dingley will hold the Sunday Pub Quiz at 8 pm (on Sunday, of course) with music provided an hour before and 30 minutes after by Sam Fiske. Sam’s Sandwich!
