Friday: A Scottish Weekend!

Irish and Scottish Pub in MinneapolisThe kilts are out for this frigid weekend as not only will we hold our weekly Kilt Night tonight at Merlins Rest, we’re also throwing a Scottish Blow-Out Party on Saturday!

* Join us Friday night for kilts and Celtic music.

* Head down to the Scottish Ramble on Saturday and come to Merlins in the evening for a night of Scottish revelry: Cock-a-Leekie Soup, libations, kilts and more. We had a blast on Burns Night. We’re going to have a blast again. All are invited.

Trivia: The US state of Virginia is officially a “commonwealth,” as in the Commonwealth of Virginia. What are the Channel Islands of Guernsey and Jersey? The answer at the end of today’s entry.

Irish Pub posterGuinness and St. Patrick’s Day are dear parts of Irish-American life, and with the outrageous scale of St. Paddy’s one might say of all American life. Guinness has now launched a (somewhat) formal campaign to have St. Patrick’s Day recognized as an official holiday in the United States.

The campaign is called Proposition 317. (That’s not a command, Mr. Watkins!)

Given the amount of work hours lost around St. Patrick’s Day, I’m not sure official recognition is necessary. But if Guinness wants to go for it, who am I to stop them? I’d rather cozy up with a pint and tuck into a bowl of Guinness Stew!

We’re also serving brunch from 9 am – 2 pm on Saturday and Sunday. It’s received rave reviews, especially our traditional Irish breakfast. Taste for yourselves!

Trivia answer: Balliwicks, as in the Balliwick of Guernsey and the Balliwick of Jersey. And though the islands are just off Normandy, they are dependent upon the United Kingdom.
