For those who took part in the weekly Sunday Pub Quiz and who would like to revisit the torturous answers, we’ll post the Q&A on Tuesday. So:
Tonight: Harrison Matthews leads the Merlins Rest Open Mic night. Bring your guitar, your singing voice, your accordion; your poems, your stories, your novel chapters; etc. It’s your mic! Things begin around 8:00/8:30. Traditional Irish ceili dancing sometimes occurs before. (Listed on OpenMics.org.)
And read on for oddities and interests in the news and special events this week at Merlins Rest…including a special menu on Valentines Day.
NEWS
* Sometimes a handshake is not just a handshake. Sometimes it’s assault…according to this case.
* The world’s fastest knitter hails from Shetland in the UK. She’s about to put it all on the line right here in Minneapolis.
* Six Nations: The Irish played well in the second half, but came up a try short against France; Wales defeated Scotland (to go–gasp!–2 – 0 in the tournament and with woeful Italy up next); and England was able to hang on for a narrow victory over Italy in Rome.
* And over at The Irish Gazette you can find a piece on exploring Northern Ireland.
THIS WEEK’S SPECIAL EVENTS
Thursday, February 14 – Valentines Day. We’ll have a special menu featuring Salmon Steak, Tiger Shrimp, Scallops, Veggie Focaccia, and more. And we’ll even take reservations that night, if you’d prefer to make them. You don’t have to, but if you want to be sure to have a table set aside, we’ll save it for you. Red roses will be on the tables. In the evening, around 9 pm, the Mosher/Ekstrand Experiment will provide romantic blues and there will most likely be some love songs before and after Mosher/Ekstrand’s set. Various other Valentines-style activities may emerge, such as poems.
Saturday, February 16 – Scottish Night! The Scottish Ramble’s first day will conclude in downtown St. Paul, and then we’ll gather here in the pub for a night of Scottish revelry: Cock-a-Leekie Soup, libations, kilts and more. We had a blast on Burns Night. We’re going to have a blast again. All are invited.
