It’s Friday!

Some Celtic session players in the pub. A right fine Friday tradition!

What a good week it’s been. Last Sunday’s pub quiz was a gas, we had a lovely Memorial Day holiday, Tuesday’s Bedlam performance (and the always-fun crowd they bring), Wednesday’s folk jam and the friends we made with a Latvian choir that night (They’ll be back! You must hear them sing, friends), and Thursday’s warm-up for the weekend. All this AND the normal work and day-to-day follies and responsibilities of life! Busy week. Relaxation is welcomed.

Thus: Friday nights at Merlins. The players will be in the house providing the Celtic tunes, the taps will be flowing, the people will be laughing. Some of the kilties (men in kilts, that is) will be here too! Pop in, sit on the patio, sit at the bar. Wherever you wish. Tell tales. Maw down on some fish and chips or the other fare on the now-expanding menu.

Point being: Enjoy the night. That’s what it’s here for.

Happy days to you all, and thanks so much for your continuing feedback and kind comments. We appreciate you.

Interesting News from the Isles

We forgot to report earlier this week on one of the grandest and most peculiar (and knee-shattering) traditions in Britain: chasing a giant wheel of cheese down a hill! This year’s competition found 3000 spectators gathering in the rain; 5 heats of racers tearing after an 8-pound wheel of Double Gloucester cheese down a seriously steep, slippery hill; and 20-some injuries, though, as this report notes, no one was knocked out this year.

Interesting News about Nerds

We love nerds, we do. We’re nerds. And though ABC’s filler material during last night’s broadcast of the Scripps National Spelling Bee was a bit much–and seriously delayed the conclusion of the show–it was nice to see the competition broadcast live and in prime time.

Adolescence is awkward enough. Now add to it the scrutiny of millions as all your facial ticks and quirks are revealed!

Congrats to Evan O’Dorney of Danville, California on his victory. (Can you spell “serrefine”?) Congrats to all involved, yes, but a little extra to runner-up Nate Gartke of Spruce Grove, Alberta, Canada, and to Isabel Jacobson of our neighbor-state Wisconsin (Madison). She put up a great fight and was last to leave the stage before the final two entered the championship round.

Well done, smarties. But could they hold their own during Merlins Rest’s Sunday pub quiz?
